5 Pro Organizing Myths that Simply Aren't True

Many people desire organized spaces, yet often lack the time and energy to achieve this on their own. Busy schedules, work commitments, and family responsibilities can make it challenging to dedicate the necessary effort to organize effectively. As a result, hiring a professional organizer can be a practical solution without adding stress to your already demanding lifestyle. Unfortunately, some people take no action and avoid reaching out to an organizer because of some common myths. Luckily, today I am debunking those myths so you will feel comfortable and confident to take the leap and call a pro like me.

Myth #1: Pro Organizers Are Judgmental of Your Home's Appearance

I am a professional organizer because I love to help people live their best possible lives and love their homes. I walk into a home ready to listen to you and help find solutions to things that aren’t working. There is no judgement, just an eagerness to help. The worst thing you can do is to “clean up” before an organizer comes over. A professional organizer wants to see how you live in your space, not to judge, but to make good decisions to support you. For example, are you a shoes-by-the-door family? Let’s make it work in a tidy way. Do you stack papers on the kitchen counter? Perhaps a simple filing system will help. While you may have negative feelings about your space (which we can change), you can rest-assured that a professional organizer is not passing judgment on you.

Myth #2: Pro Organizers Are Way Too Expensive for Most People

Listen, organizers cost money. But so does clutter. How many times have you purchased a jar of tomato sauce only to come home to find five in the back of the pantry? Or you find your car dinged on the street because your garage is too crammed with stuff to park inside? These are just a few examples of how clutter is costing you.

It is a professional organizer’s job to make your life easier and more functional by creating systems within your home. If you don’t know how to do it yourself or don’t have the time, it is a worthwhile investment. In the end, the initial cost of organizing services is outweighed by the long-term benefits of efficiency and peace of mind.

Myth #3: Pro Organizers Make You Get Rid of All Your Things

A professional organizer will not make you get rid of all your things! We are there to help you declutter and minimize, organize and create systems. We do, however, ask a lot of questions (Do you love it? Need it? Use it?) and help you talk though an item. Remember that while we can create magic in your home, we cannot create more space without reducing the amount of possessions you own. Luckily, we can come up with creative solutions for you to keep what you love and are attached to.

Myth #4: Pro Organizers Require You to Provide Your Own Storage

While every organizer is different, I do not require clients to provide their own organizing products. My process begins with a consultation where I take measurements and photos of the space. I also consult the client about the type of product desired. Most clients trust my choices but some clients only want eco-friendly products (i.e. no plastic) or a certain color scheme. I will also use what the client has, as long as it allows me to create efficient systems. Before the project, I will plan out the space and purchase bins, baskets, and other needed products. I also handle returns and additional purchases. Lastly, while the client pays for all of the products used, I do pass on any discounts I receive to my clients.

Myth #5: Pro Organizers Transform Your Home in a Single Day

Transformation takes time. And every project is different. Once I consult with a client in their home, I have a better idea of a timeline but most spaces take at least two days to declutter and organize. A small pantry can take less than one day, and a packed garage may take a week. If my client wants to be completely involved in the project, less of my time may be needed, as the client can do homework and certain tasks without me. I have had clients who I work with for a day and clients who I work with over months. But do remember, “Rome wasn’t built in a day.”

I hope I have disproved the above myths for you and that you now feel more comfortable reaching out to a professional organizer like me. Please note that in addition to decluttering and organizing, I will take your purged items to the donation center during your project so you won’t be driving around with bags in your trunk for a month. Other services I provide include periodic maintenance, unpacking after a move, and arranging for junk or donation pick up. Every organizer is different so make sure to ask if there is something you need.

If you're ready for a home that feels effortless and supports your busy life, I would be honored to help. Reach out and let's chat!

See you soon,

Leslie
