4 Pro Tips to Organize & Maintain Tidy Bedrooms for Your Kiddos
A tidy bedroom is crucial for a child as it fosters a sense of responsibility and helps in developing good organizational habits from a young age. Teaching kids to maintain an organized space instills discipline and teaches children to respect their belongings. Below are 4 tips to help you set up and maintain tidy bedrooms for your kids.
Step #1: Assess the Space
First things first, identify what is not working in the space. Is there too little storage? Are there too many toys? Can your child access things on his or her own? Is there room for play?
Once you have identified your pain points, it’s time to get started. Children should have some space to play in their room so make sure the furniture is placed around the edges. For toy storage, bins or cubbies work best, but make sure you also have shelves for books and games. A front facing bookshelf is great for young kids, while older children can store books on a regular book shelf. If a desk is needed, be sure there are drawers for school and art supplies. Don’t forget to take a look at the clothing storage. To support your child’s independence, be sure they can access their clothes on lower hanging rods and accessible drawers.
Step #2: Sort the Room
It’s time to sort! Pull out the toys, books, and clothing (not all at once!) and sort by type. Have your child help as sorting is an important skill for the young ones, and older children will take ownership of their space when they are included in the process. Add cars, stuffies, and kitchen toys to bins and hang dress up clothes on hooks. Use under bed storage if you need additional space. Fill shelves with games and books. Hang or fold the clothes and add labels with words or pictures to identify each clothing item’s home.
Donate or toss toys that are broken or not played with anymore. Be sure to donate books your child has outgrown, and do the same for clothes and shoes. Click here for a list of donation resources.
Step #3: Create the Routine
To help children keep their bedrooms tidy, start by establishing a consistent daily routine, such as setting a specific time each day for cleaning up, like before bedtime. Make the process engaging by turning it into a game or offering rewards for completing tasks. Break down the cleaning into manageable steps, like picking up toys, putting away clothes, and making the bed, and encourage the kids to maintain these habits consistently.
Step #4: Set the Example
Children learn by observing so you need to set the example if you want your kids’ rooms to stay tidy. It’s best for you to consistently maintain your spaces in an organized manner, demonstrating the benefits of cleanliness and order. You can involve the kids in regular cleaning routines, showing how to sort and store belongings properly. Encouraging a sense of responsibility by assigning age-appropriate tasks helps reinforce these habits. Additionally, praising children for their efforts and progress in keeping their room tidy can motivate them to continue maintaining their space.
Now that your kids’ rooms are tidy and organized and you’ve set routines and examples, you are set up for success. Being tidy doesn’t mean things are perfect, just that everything has a place.
