By making the laundry room one of the hardest working spaces in your home, you can maximize its potential for multitasking. A well-organized and efficient laundry room can function as a storage space for cleaning supplies, a place to sort and fold laundry, and even a place to do minor repairs and crafts. With the right setup, it can make doing laundry and other tasks much easier and faster. In this post, I will show you how to make your laundry room an essential space in the home that can help make household tasks easier and more efficient.

Determine a Place for Dirty Laundry Drop-Offs

You have a laundry bin for each family member’s soiled clothes. But do you also have them located in places that make sense for your family? If proximity to the main entrance of the home will catch dirty laundry coming in from outside (think sports uniforms), keep a covered bin by the door. Keep a laundry basket in the laundry room for used rags and dishtowels, so you don’t need to carry them through the house and add them to your clothing hampers (eeew). Think about your family’s needs (as well as the laundry “do-er’s”) and collect laundry in places that make sense for your lifestyle.

Add Ample Storage for All Occasions

Many laundry rooms also serve as a utility space for the home. Aside from laundry supplies, keep your cleaning supplies and backstock (space permitting) in the laundry room. Make your laundry room you home’s go-to space for any home maintenance supplies such as tools, extension cords, and lightbulbs. Keep all of your pet supplies in one place, too. Don’t forget to invest in drawer organizers, turntables, and bins to store like items together for ultimate organization.

Take Advantage of the Vertical Spaces

Whether you are designing a new laundry room or working with an existing one, optimize the vertical space in the room. If it’s a small space (or you just want to optimize storage), stack the laundry machines. Add a pegboard or hooks behind the door for brooms and mops. Use the back of the door for storage by adding a cloth shoe organizer or a hook for your ironing board. Put your shelves to work for you and your things. A shelf with 4 inches of space is perfect for extra indoor doormats, but you may need a really tall space to store your stick vacuum. Consider where you will store your items and move your shelves around to suit your needs.

A functional, organized laundry room should serve all your laundry needs but can also be the hub for your home’s maintenance. Don’t forget to create some counter space to fold and sort laundry! Lastly, add a few decorative touches such as wall art, colorful towels, and a rug to make the space more inviting.
